Cairns people are from many different backgrounds, both indigenous Australians and foreigners. The region is truly multicultural and has one of the oldest indigenous communities in the world: the Kuku Yalanji.
Cairns is a great place to study, with smaller campuses, a relaxed atmosphere, and a vast rainforest and ocean. Many of the regular courses are offered at Cairns university and tertiary education facilities. There are also courses and degrees related to the natural environment or career opportunities in the area. James Cook University Cairns has one of the most renowned research and education facilities studying the tropics and Far North Queensland TAFE has the Maritime Academy which offers training courses covering the entire marine industry.
Cairns is a tourist area par excellence. For this reason, it has become a center for international students who want to study English and get involved in this industry as they can learn the language with a focus on tourism.
If you are going to attend James Cook University, Smithfield is the best suburb for you. The JCU campus is just a short walk away! There are plenty of amenities, too, and Smithfield is home to a shopping mall and movie theater.
Smithfield is a 20-minute drive from the city, but with all the infrastructure in place in Smithfield, you’ll rarely have to go there. As a bonus, Smithfield is only 5-10 minutes from Cairns North Beaches. These beaches are some of the best in the world, with soft sand and beautiful blue waters.
Edge Hill is an ideal suburb if you prefer the city lifestyle. The suburb is only a 5 minute drive from both Cairns city center and the airport. You will be surrounded by all the amenities with shops, places to eat and bars within walking distance. Edge Hill is the perfect suburb to migrate to in search of the best of both worlds: the city and life in nature.
If you’ve always dreamed of living near a tropical beach, Trinity Beach is the ideal suburb! The actual beach at Trinity Beach is a favorite of Cairns locals. The esplanade beyond the beach is a hub of restaurants, cafes, and bars. The suburb has been named the new “Palm Cove”, which is a popular beach suburb and vacation spot north of Cairns. But Trinity Beach is a better suburb to settle in than Palm Cove for several reasons. The suburb is closer to the city center, so the commute to work won’t be as long. Plus, it’s less expensive than Palm Cove.
Redlynch is a popular suburb with immigrants looking to settle in Cairns. Just a 20 minute drive from Cairns city centre, Redlynch is a perfect escape from the bustling city, yet close enough if you need to go into the city for work. Surrounded by streams, waterfalls, mountains, trails, and parks, Redlynch offers a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by nature.
Cairns is characterized by its tropical climate: a hot, humid season with monsoon rains and a hotter, drier season with heavy rains. The city is located in an area of great biodiversity that attracts students, professionals and tourists, as well as being one of the preferred destinations for backpackers in Australia. Cairns is a major tourist hotspot as it is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and other natural attractions such as Cape Tribulation and the Atherton Tablelands.
Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world. The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises more than 3,000 individual reef systems, coral cays and hundreds of tropical islands with golden, sun-kissed beaches.
Due to its natural beauty, the Great Barrier Reef has become one of the most sought after tourist destinations in the world. The visitor can enjoy many experiences including snorkeling, scuba diving, airplane or helicopter tours, glass-bottom boat viewing, semi-submersible and educational trips, cruise tours, whale watching and swimming with dolphins.
Cape Tribulation
One of the most biologically diverse areas in the world, Cape Tribulation was declared a World Heritage Site for the Humid Tropics in 1988. It offers a combination of tropical jungle and beaches. Boat trips are available to the Great Barrier Reef, which is to the east. Cape Tribulation is a hiking paradise with many short walks on the beaches or in the rainforest. The experienced can spend a day hiking to admire the spectacular views from Mount Sorrow. Guided walks on private properties show you animals and plants you might otherwise miss, or join a night tour to see nocturnal animals.
Atherton Tablelands.
The Tablelands is a nature park has a beautiful temperate climate free of coastal moisture yet accessible to those coastal areas. It’s a park full of natural attractions, such as Hastie Swamp, a two-tiered bird hideaway that sees thousands of birds in their natural habitat, or Crystal Caves on Atherton’s Main Street.
Kuranda
The picturesque mountain retreat of Kuranda is 25km northwest of Cairns. Known as the “Village in the Rainforest”, it offers wildlife attractions including the Koala Gardens, Butterfly Sanctuary and Rainforestation, as well as markets, quaint cafes and boutiques to explore. A special way to access Kuranda is via gondola on the Skyrail high above the spectacular Barron Falls, or take a step back in time on the Kuranda Scenic Rail.

I have never experienced better service than what ACE Australia has provided. They have been extremely friendly, outstandingly professional and helped me at every step with my application like hand holding. They would explain everything with absolute clarity and help prepare every document as if it is their own. Special thanks to Mr. Lucas and Mr. Nicolas at ACE Australia, for their dedication during pandemic as they had to twice defer and re-arrange
many documents amid international travel restrictions.
Highly recommended and endorsed.
