The Travel Bubble between Australia and New Zealand has arrived!
This week we received great news from the brother countries of Australia and New Zealand. As most of you may know, for several months the Governments of Australia and New Zealand have been working in the implementation of a “Trans-Tasman Travel Bubble” between both countries. This means a sanitary travel bubble between both countries, where people in Australia would be able to travel to New Zealand and vice versa. This week has been announced that the Travel Bubble will be launched on April 19th of this year. Without a doubt, these are excellent news that bring us closer as a community to achieve more normality in such extraordinary circumstances to whom we have been exposed during this Pandemic.
According to the Trans-Tasman Travel Bubble, from April 19th flights from Australia to New Zealand will be available and you won’t need to do quarantine on your arrival! The only restrictions the New Zealand Government will impose on travelers are:
- If you have COVID symptoms or you are waiting for a COVID Test result, you won’t be able to travel.
- You must wear a mask during your flight.
- You will have to provide contact details for your stay in New Zealand
This announcement was made by New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern. The basis of this decision is that both countries have handled in great way the prevention of COVID infections. Today, both Australia and New Zealand, are considered the countries who have better deal with the Pandemic situation in the whole world.
Even though a “Safe Travel Zone» between New Zealand and Australia has existed since October 2020, that allowed the arrivals of people from New Zealand to certain “Safe Zones” of Australia, the characteristics of the new Travel Bubble announced are different. The “Safe Travel Zone” was an agreement that authorized trips from New Zealand to certain zones of Australia, having to do a mandatory self-funded quarantine in selected hotels of New Zealand on their comeback to the country.
The new Travel Bubble brings great benefits to the international student community! Given the instability of the current situation regarding the spread of the virus and the uncertainty of the close future, many travelers in Australia found themselves in the situation where they are holding a Bridging Visa that doesn’t allow them to apply for a Student Visa or any other Temporary Visafrom within Australia – also known as “Onshore Status”-. Holding a Bridging Visa, in order to be able to apply for a Student Visa, they need to apply from outside Australia. The Trans-Tasman Travel Bubble allows those travelers in this situation to fly to New Zealand and apply to their Student Visa from there. Thus, they will be able to apply for a Student Visa and re-enter to Australia with this visa, without need of undertaking mandatory quarantine in New Zealand. As always, ACE Australia’s Team will be there to help every student on their particular and personal situation. We recommend you to travel to New Zealand with a previous plan regarding your future visa in Australia, in order to implement that plan as soon as you arrive in New Zealand. By doing so, the wait to re-enter to Australia will be reduced!
All Australian States have updated the information on their official websites regarding the protocols of arrival from New Zealand. To the exemption of those people traveling from New Zealand to the state of Western Australia, you won’t need to undertake mandatory quarantine on your arrival from New Zealand to Australia. In the case of Western Australia, you will need to do mandatory self-funded quarantine in a selected hotel. For those people looking to travel to Western Australia directly from New Zealand, an alternative to mandatory quarantine would be to enter from New Zealand to another state of Australia and spend at least 14 days there before traveling to Western Australia. In the rest of Australia’s states, New Zealand has been declared a “Green Zone” and you won’t need to undertake mandatory quarantine when arriving directly from New Zealand.
Below, you will find information about the protocols of arrival from New Zealand in each state of Australia:
