On February 22, 2023 the Department of Home Affairs published officially that as of July 1, 2023, those who have studied for a Degree that is in the list of qualifications and eligible occupationsIn addition to the Temporary Graduate Visa 485 Post-Study Work Stream, they will be eligible for an extra 2 years of Temporary Graduate Visa 485 Post-Study Work Stream.
Your international merit recognized! The Australian Government has extended post-study work rights for those students and professionals who have graduated from educational institutions in Australia, adding two additional years to the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) – Link
This type of visa is for those studying in Australia for a Bachelor Degree, Masters Degree, Masters by Research, or PhD. It is not a requirement that what is studied is closely related to a skill in demand in Australia. The duration of the visa will also depend on the course of study: for Bachelor Degree and Masters by Coursework, a 2-year Graduate Visa is granted. For Masters by research, 3 years and, for a PhD, 4 years.
Great news! On February 22, 2023 the Department of Home Affairs published officially that as of July 1, 2023, those who have studied for a Degree that is in the list of qualifications and eligible occupationswill be able to access 2 years extra Temporary Graduate Visa 485 Post-Study Work Stream. As we shared, with the implementation of the new official statement the current configuration will be extended by two years. This will extend post-study work rights to:
- Two years to four years for selected Bachelor Degrees.
- Three to five years for selected Master Degrees.
- Four years to six years for all doctoral studies (PhD’s).
List of qualifications and eligible occupations, what is it?
To implement the extension, the List of Eligible Qualifications and Occupations was developed, which is a list of those Degrees and occupations currently in demand in Australia. They are selected through a mapping process conducted by Jobs and Skills Australia and the Department of Education.
This document includes:
- A list of occupations identified from the 2022 Skills Priority List. Among them we can highlight: Trades (Carpenter, Cabinet Maker, Joiner), Nursing, Accounting or Engineering (Civil Engineer, Automotive Engineer, Chemical Engineer).
- A summary list of eligible qualifications by occupational category.
- Attention! All doctoral studies are considered eligible for the measure, regardless of the field of study and are therefore not listed individually.

Important points to keep in mind:
- The complete list of eligible qualifications will be posted by the Department of Education prior to the July 1, 2023 implementation date.
- This list will be monitored and reviewed annually. This approach means that the implementation of the list will be flexible in response to changes in the labor market and able to address any risks that may arise.
